{"id":70,"date":"2025-06-27T09:58:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T09:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pigeon.vet\/?page_id=70"},"modified":"2025-08-09T20:14:59","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T20:14:59","slug":"defra-approved-disinfectants-as-of-27-06-2025","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pigeon.vet\/?page_id=70","title":{"rendered":"Defra Approved Disinfectants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">As of 04\/08\/2025<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Virkon S powder has had its Diseases of Poultry Order registration reinstated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usage rate for dsinfecting race baskets for cross channel racing is 1g Virkon S powder in 150ml water or 20g in 3L water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the disinfectants registered under the Diseases of Poultry Order can be seen below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"core\/file\" class=\"wp-block-file\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!state.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/pigeon.vet\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ApprovedDisinfectants-060825.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:600px\" aria-label=\"Embed of ApprovedDisinfectants-060825.\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-bd1d6304-f17a-477a-a73f-d88b510d9d8f\" href=\"https:\/\/pigeon.vet\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ApprovedDisinfectants-060825.pdf\">ApprovedDisinfectants-060825<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pigeon.vet\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ApprovedDisinfectants-060825.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button wp-element-button\" download aria-describedby=\"wp-block-file--media-bd1d6304-f17a-477a-a73f-d88b510d9d8f\">Download<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, the certifying Official Veterinary Surgeon will need to know what brand of disinfectant you are using and the rate you have used it at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally and always very important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Read the product instructions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Measure the amount of product being used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Measure the amount of water being used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you are working at the correct concentrations: amount of powder, liquid or tablet to water\/<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear appropriate protective clothing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They may discolour or stain your clothing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Handle carefully according to manufacturers instructions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Assume all concentrated and in use disinfectants are dangerous<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They could kill you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On your skin they may burn you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In your eyes they may blind you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Breathing in may cause choking and respiratory damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swallow them can burn, cause ulcers, cause serious gut damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">As of 03\/07\/2025<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Virkon S, following further tests, has had its General Orders approval reinstated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is still NOT APPROVED under the Diseases of Poultry Order. I am sure that it is being re-tested but until approval confirmation is received it cannot be used to disinfect against Newcastle disease, Pigeon paramyxovirus or Avian Influenza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are suitable iodine based disinfectants but please remember they usually have a tendency to discolour everything yellow, especially if it was originally white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">As of 27\/06\/2025<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following list is of all the brands that contain the same active ingredient as Virkon S. I have highlighted in yellow the brands that I have used or have knowledge of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The usage rate is given in column 3 for the Diseases of Poultry Order ( the dilution rate that will kill Newcastle disease, Avian Influenza and Pigeon Paramyxovirus).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Example, I am using Bio-VX because it is first on the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> You will need to add 1 g of Bio-VX powder to 200ml water (5g per litre) to meet with the regulations for cleaning and disinfecting race baskets for racing from the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you want to disinfect your crates against both pigeon paratyphoid and pigeon paramyxovirus.
